Lorazepam belongs to the benzodiazepine drug class. Benzodiazepine drugs have a benzene ring fused with a diazepine ring. This is a seven-membered ring that has the two nitrogen constituents R1 and R4. The benzodiazepine drug ring is also bonded to a 2-chlorinated Phenyl ring at R5. The chlorine group can also be substituted at R7 in the benzyl rings. Lorazepam also contains an OH- (hydroxy) group that is substituted at R3. Lorazepam also has an oxygen group that is double-bonded to R2 in its diazepine rings to form a ketone. This oxygen substitution at R2 can be found in other benzodiazepine drugs that have the suffix –azepam.

Lorazepam, also known as Ativan or Tavor, is a depressant substance belonging to the benzodiazepine family. Lorazepam can be used to treat anxiety, insomnia, severe seizures and to sedate hospitalized patients.

For long-term users or heavy users, abrupt discontinuation of benzodiazepines can pose a danger to their health or life. People who are dependent on benzodiazepines should reduce their dosage over a longer period of time.

The benzodiazepines have a wide range of effects. They bind to the benzodiazepine-receptor site and increase the effectiveness and effects of neurotransmitter Gamma-aminobutyric Acid (GABA) through their receptors. This site is the most important inhibitory receptor in the brain and modulates the effects of lorazepam (or calming) on the nervous system.

The anticonvulsant effects of benzodiazepines could be due in part or whole to their binding to voltage-dependent sodium channel channels, rather than to benzodiazepine receptors.

Lorazepam may have a higher affinity for GABA receptors than other benzodiazepines. This could explain the amnesic effects.

Lorazepam is subject to glucuronidation via Hepatic Pathways, which results in lorazepam-glucuronide being the main metabolite. The glucuronide attached to Lorazepam increases the polarity and allows for a quicker excretion through urine
